THE BREAK DOWN
In November 2005 MTV we were asked o create the packaging, voting spots and logo/font for the MTV’s Australia Video Music Awards held on April 12th 2006. This was a big project for us at the time. We pitched the concept of ‘Audio creatures’ - creatures that produced music. Combining - live action shot in and around Sydney, Australia. We designed and animated abstract creatures pulsating in time to surreal percussion and electronic audio design.
The basis of the clips was to compel the MTV audience to view their everyday environment from a different visual and audio perspective.
" These blew me away when the promos started popping up before the event, and actually led me to watch the broadcast. An unusually classy and unique result for MTV, but I think that's common to a lot of work Umeric produce.
In my opinion, and I have no allusions to you agreeing with me, this is a great example of how these packages should work. They broke up the show perfectly, the mundane locations with the audio design and movements of the surreal ‘sound creatures’ contrasted well against the lead-ins and subsequent snippets of music video. And the type treatment is great – everyone I saw watching the promo packages was surprised when the titles sprouted fur.
As a result, Umeric has created a brilliant set of videos that perfectly combine live action/3d/music in ingenious ways. It's interesting to see which sounds connect with which part of the Audio creatures - as they call it. Very awesome. "

BRANDING
Along side creating the films for the awards night. We also was asked to brand the MTV awards across all mediums. We ended up designing a logo, fonts, invites, stationary, apparel and a website.

FLUTTERBY - FONT
Since every film ends with an award title. We felt we needed to make our own custom font to work with our audio creatures. We are not font designers ( or maybe we are now ) - so it was a fun project to to build a working font. Flutterby is a bold display face built upon pure geometric shapes. Which comes in two forms. The Drunken version is the party version of the two.
Stylistically, Flutterby's prominent letterforms relates to the display typefaces from the seventies, yet is highly contemporary in it's finish. We added alternate characters and shapes - also it has the MTV logo we created for ease of use.
